You’ve probably experienced it too: that friend who tags you in a photo where you don’t look particularly flattering or you’re not in the best circumstances. You ask them, in the name of your friendship, to remove that unfortunate photo and they, being a good friend, make it disappear within minutes. It’s important to understand how to remove photos from the internet and from Google search results, in case they don’t disappear on their own.

This would be the ideal scenario, but there are occasions when removing photos from the internet is far more complicated. For example, when you’ve been photographed at a party or event, or when third parties share images or videos featuring you without your consent.

When these situations occur, the darker and more dangerous side of the internet becomes evident, leading to identity theft, harassment, or extortion. Exercising your right to be forgotten is how you reclaim control — both on the web and on social media or any other platform where you feel exposed.

What rights do you have when removing photos from the internet?

A photo or image in which you appear online is personal in nature, whether you’re an individual or a brand (though with different implications in the latter case). If personal or private photos are shared without legitimate consent, whether on websites or social media, you should know this is something you can control, as it’s a right protected by the General Data Protection Regulation and by law.

Within this regulation lies the right to have an image removed if it damages your right to dignity or your online reputation. To exercise this right, websites must provide visitors with the ability to request the removal of personal information that is published or used without authorization.

What steps should you take to remove images from the internet?

Under the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), which became enforceable on May 25, 2018, all companies in the European Union, or operating within it, must comply with a series of rules. These rules apply to the protection of personal data, its use, and free movement.

The regulation grants individuals full rights over their personal data and the ability to revoke access to it from any company holding it at any time. This applies whether the company has your data legitimately because you provided it, or illegally, which could result in penalties. To do this, websites must provide contact information and a data controller in an accessible manner through which you can request the actions you deem appropriate. Follow these steps:

  • Search for the image you want to remove on images.google.com.
  • Select the image link. Right-click on the photo thumbnail and select “Copy image link”.
  • Go to the “Remove outdated content” page.
  • In the box next to “Request removal”, paste the URL.
  • Click “Request removal”.
  • A message may appear indicating that the website owner hasn’t removed the image or webpage you’re trying to remove. Follow the steps shown on the screen.
  • If a message appears saying “This content no longer exists on the website”, click Request removal.

After completing these steps, a form will appear where you can check the status of your request.

Removing photos from social media

This is one of the most problematic and controversial aspects regarding information published online. Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and other social media platforms are places where large amounts of content are stored, with photos being especially prevalent.

In many cases, the photos being shared were not published by you. This makes removal more complicated — from the platform’s perspective, the person who uploaded the image is the one responsible for it. That said, current data protection laws put you in control of your own image and data, giving you the right to go directly to that platform and demand removal.

Our blog has step-by-step guides on how to delete photos on Instagram and remove photos from Facebook, among other platforms.

Common Questions About Removing Photos from the Internet

Who owns the rights to images on the internet?

The rights to an image of a person belong to that person. If that person has transferred their rights, you would need to see under what conditions the rights were transferred and what permissions exist for using a photo or image.

Can I remove any image from the internet?

You should be able to remove any personal image from the internet if you wish to. However, in some cases, if it’s a purely informational public image that doesn’t damage someone’s honor or reputation, it can be more difficult.

What happens if someone doesn’t remove a personal image after I request it?

Generally, when you request that an image be removed from the internet, a company has one month to process your request. If your image isn’t removed within that time, you can use legal procedures to have the content removed, which may result in penalties for the site where your image is published.

Can I claim damages for publishing my photos without consent?

In some cases, you can claim damages for a photo published online. Generally, for these types of claims to be enforceable, they must be ordered by a court.

Is the image of a person the same as the image of a brand?

The image of a person is not the same as the image of a brand. Individuals have much stronger protections than brands, and there are actions brands cannot take when requesting the removal of their photos.

Can I remove images of my children or other people?

You can only remove images of people over whom you have legal custody or legal decision-making authority through lawful consent. Otherwise, you cannot request actions on photos and images that don’t belong to you. With social media platforms, you can report images that violate their policies or the law.
